/ 5363
The national sport of Haiti is football (soccer). The football team are found in 1904. They play football in the stadium of Stade Sylvio Cator. The name of the football team is the Grenadiers. For the FIFA World Cup, they qualified in 1974 at Almaine when they came in place 15. The trainer is Marc Collat. His uniforms are red and blue with their logo. Haiti has a very long tradition in the Caribbean. They are the third strongest Caribbean team after Costa Rica and Mexico. They are very talented players. For example, Johnny Placide is one of the most famous players. He’s the captain. He is the goalkeeper for the team. For the Caribbean Cup, the Grenadiers were in third place in 1998, 1999, 2012, 2014. They came second in 2001. They won the cup in 2007. The Sylvio Cator Stadium is on rue Oswald Durand in Port-au- Prince. The capacity is 10,500 people. On the Haitian flag, it says “union is strength” and it says that on his uniforms. Football is the most important sport in Haiti

The Athletes

I n Haiti, there are a lot of professional athletes. Most of these professional athletes are soccer, boxing, or basketball players. One football player is Wilde Donald Guerrier. He plays for a team named Wisla Kraków. He plays the position of a defense or midfielder. In addition, he also played for the qualification of the 2014 World Cup. Another athlete who plays football, is Soni Mustivar. He plays for a team called Sporting Kansas City in the Major League. Soni Mustivar plays from the position of a midfielder. Can be used as an attacker. There are a lot of athletes who are boxers. One is Adonis Stevenson. Adonis Stevenson is a Canadian boxer but, he was born in Haiti. His nickname is “Superman” Stevenson. Because he is currently the light heavyweight ring champion. The last athlete is, Samuel Dalembert. Samuel Dalembert is a Haitian-Canadian basketball player. During college, he started playing basketball at Seton Hall University. Then, he played professionally for the New York Knicks for the NBA. All these athletes who are very proud represent Haitian sport and much more!

The Teams

D In Haiti there are several sports teams but the popular sports team in Haiti is the Haitian Football Team (soccer). This team is a soccer team because in Haiti football is currently soccer.

The Haitian Football Team has a lot of nicknames but the most used nickname is Les Grenadiers. Other nicknames are Le Rouge et Bleu (Their uniform color is red and blue) and La Sélection Nationale (This team is the best known team in Haiti). There are many other teams in Haiti that play other sports but soccer is a very popular sport in Haiti.

Another popular sport in Haiti is basketball. The Haitian basketball team plays in the NBA but the team is not very popular although they are successful because the Grenadiers are super popular in this country.

The Grenadiers were created in 1904 and they played a lot of games and they won a lot of games. Even though they also lost games their fans continue to support the team. Fans know the team will win a lot of other games!

The Grenadiers have been very successful over the years. Their most successful games were with the Virgin Islands in April 10, 2001 and November 24, 2004. In 2001 they won 12 to 1 and their 2004 game won 11 to 0. There are also games they lost as their worst game with Mexico in 1953. On July 19, 1953 The Grenadiers had their worst game. They lost with 0 goals and Mexico had 8 goals. Their fans have continued to support the team because they don`t forget all the games that the football (soccer) team have had.

There are a lot of sports teams in Haiti which are great fun! The Grendadiers will always come out in Haiti and their fans will always support! The Haitian football team or Haitian Crèole, Ekip de foutbòl Ayiti, will continue to play games and win their games for everyone.

Haiti at the Olympic Games

D since Haiti has had its earthquake everyone must think that Haiti was nothing. All this is false Haiti is an extraordinary country even if they are very no one in the Olympics. They only won two medals, one in long jump and another in team shooting. Sylvio Cator is one of the former world record holder for the long jump (7.93m in 1928). Since then, they won their two Olympic medals, they had no real hope to gain. And here is the name of the best Haitian athlete. Sylvio Cator, who played football during his youth, played at the Trivoli Athletic Club and the Haitian Running Club, before moving on to athletics. selected for the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, he finished 15th in the high jump and 12th in the long jump. In 1928 in Amsterdam, the Haitian won the silver medal in the long jump competition, behind the American Ed Hamm. In 1928, at the Olympic Stadium in Doves, Cator broke the world record in jumping held by Hamm. Haiti had won another medal but this was by the rifle team. In 1924 at the Olympic Games in France (Haiti had a good football team, but without achievement, failed to win a single medal, thanks to the good teams from other countries.) Did you know that in memory of Sylvio Cator Haiti has one. Haiti would like to win several more medals and also to participate in the Winter Olympics. They will only be able to have the opportunity that Haiti is located in the Caribbean and the Caribbean is a very hot place so there is no land to practice. Haiti is not yet a developing country so for Haiti to win another medal, the country must be more popular and more developed for the rest of the Olympics. Haiti is not doing so badly except that it does not win medals for injuries in athletics or team sports like soccer are painful and that is a weak point of any sport. The other team will use it 100%. I’m telling you now Haiti could make a spectacular comeback and win more medals.
